Interstellar An Epic - The Dissection
Hello All,
In this post I am going to dissect the movie and try to explain the movie as a whole including the various concepts involved in it. This interpretation I assume is as accurate as my research goes. But as Murphy's law states "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong", so I truly encourage corrections and alternate views on my meager attempt on deciphering this epic. :)
Also please note, I haven't written this explanation in the reference of a character's perspective in the movie.I have written it in the perspective of the author of the movie. Different frame of reference :)
To start off I'll be stating a few facts and would also be giving a few definitions of various concepts involved in the movie.
Fact 1: Christopher Nolan along with his brother Jonathan Nolan and countless other physicists did not write this movie (as the few people with limited understanding of elementary physics suggested) without any research. Please understand that even though you are an audience there are thousands of brilliant and intellectual minds around the world who is going to scrutinize Nolan's work, and the world doesn't end with you and Nolan knows that too. He has touched on various concepts of physics which are undeniably true and has in fact given a scientifically viable theory for various unproven yet possible concepts in physics such as Time Travel and that Gravity and Human Emotion are the two things that can pass through time unchanged (The whole moral of the movie).
So people who still think the movie was crap and utter nonsense (mostly people who have no knowledge of physics) can go back to watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PToq1FyUdBw and enjoy and close this blog right now after this next full-stop.

Fact 2: This would be known by any Nolan fan that Nolan loves and uses a lot of Game theory in his movies. So, I would be explaining the theories he used in interstellar too. A few examples where he has used game theories in the past are: Dark Knight - Joker with the Social Experiment - this was nothing but the Prisoner's dilemma, again Joker and the Mob negotiation was a Monty Hall problem. Inception also showcased the Monty Hall problem and also the Elimination of the Dominant Strategy and Nash Equilibrium. Do not worry If you haven't heard of any of these. They are way too simple and i'll explain everything as smooth as hot knife through butter.
Definition 1 - Murphy's Law: This law simply states that "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong". An alternate explanation that I would give is: "Anything that can happen will happen". This means that as an example, if the sea has got a crust beneath it, which may slip, crack and cause earthquakes, then that will definitely happen at a point of time, no matter how you see it, or assume that it may not happen at all or ignore it. Another sequential explanation is that, due to Murphy's law, there will always be a sequence in time where you lose in an exam, win in that exam, don't give that exam, die during that exam etc etc and the countless possibilities thus leading to a concept of parallel universe. This is also shown in the movie. I'll come to that later.
Definition 2 - Dominant Strategy: This is one of the game theory which states that "A strategy is dominant if, regardless of what any other player does, the strategy earns a player a larger payoff than any other. Hence, a strategy is dominant if it is always better than any other strategy, for any profile of other players' actions". I'll explain this more later, in the context of this movie. Interested people can research on Prisoner's Dilemma and Nash Equilibrium.
Ok!! Enough of definitions, let's come to the fun part and dive directly into the movie.
The human race is suffering a chance for extinction due to extreme blight and need an alternative solution for existence. All have become farmers and gave up on major parts of science and are focusing on growing crops for sustenance. The last of the crop is not surprisingly the Corn, which stays and is supporting life, but according to Old Prof. Brand (Michael Caine) corn is also going to die off as he explains that to Cooper(Matthew McConaughey) who is an ex-NASA pilot and currently the best one alive.
Now the only viable solution is to reach out into the outer space and find out another inhabitable planet for the human race to survive and thrive. This was confirmed as a possibility as "They" an unknown entity or entities started helping and showing signs and also creating a wormhole to another galaxy.
So NASA was restarted and along with the idea came two possible plans:
Plan A: Send out explorers through the wormhole which appears near Saturn (explained in detail later) to find the inhabitable planets and then return back and take along the existing human race. Bounding condition: the equation of gravity needs to be solved so that Prof. Brand can setup the space station to take the human race across. He promises Cooper that he would solve it by the time he is back.
Plan B: Take cultured human cells along the journey and if the possibility of coming back to earth is not viable then start the new human race in the new found "Earth". 12 scientists headed by Dr. Mann (Matt Damon) started off for the journey but did not return back yet. However, three of the 12 scientists activated their beacons. Miller's planet(planet with huge wave), Mann's planet(Matt Damon's planet) and at last Edmund's planet(where Amelia Brand- Anne Hathaway was shown at the end of the movie). Now it was Cooper and team's responsibility of finding the right planet and saving the human race from extinction.
Now let us understand the sort of Dominant Strategy that I explained before at play here. The simple strategy and the final Payoff is that no matter whether Plan A or Plan B takes place, also assuming Murphy's law of all possibilities, the Human race will definitely survive either with the existing humans or the new cultured ones or both. HOW?? is the the big question and thus the movie. Let me show Dominant Strategy in a simple diagram:
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

HOW?? is the the big question and thus the movie. Let me show Dominant Strategy in a simple diagram:
Let's move ahead. So, Cooper and team goes out and tries to set out for the first planet. After lot of discussions they accept that Miller's planet was the first viable solution as it was farther from the Gargantuan (the big black hole) and thus the time disrupt will be only 1 Miller hour = 7 Earth years compared to that of Mann's or Edmund's planet which would be more. The time disrupt is a concept of relativity and as we move farther from our earth's gravity, time changes for various physical mass. This is the reason that the satellites orbiting around our Earth have their clocks re-calibrated to match our ground time.
So they drop off to Miller's planet using Cooper's unarguable piloting skills just to realize that the beacon was set off by mistake and that the whole planet is actually a huge area of water. This mistake cost them dearly also owing to Brand's reluctance to accept reality that the planet was useless and return back to the craft. This resulted in them spending close to 3hrs and few minutes (23 Earth years) at Miller's thus when they return back they see that Dr. Romilly is aged and has been waiting for them for 23 years.
The next planet they decide to take up is Mann's planet, but here Brand's emotion takes over her decision due to her love for Edmund and also the possibility of seeing him once if possible at all. Here is the first time Brand describes that Love passes through time unchanged. Cooper convinces her not to take up that decision and they proceed to Mann which later on transcribes to another set of unfortunate and dark events due to Mann's greed to survive. He activated the beacon in the hope of someone finding him and also reprogrammed and dissembled his robot to self destruct if anyone tries to find this. His planet was uninhabitable but he makes up stories. Later he dies after he tried to kill Cooper and all that is understood. The main information that pops up here is Murphy (Cooper's daughter) finally finds out from old dying Prof Brand that Plan A was never a possibility and that the equation was already solved by him and it was never possible to work out so he created a dummy trade-off to set Plan B in motion. This is relayed back to Cooper and team who become distraught. So, Cooper decides to go back to Earth, and this is why Mann tries to kill him and go back himself after burying all his lies.
Next up, only Cooper and Brand is alive and of course TARS and CASE the robots. Before Romilly died he gave Cooper a suggestion to take a glimpse into the Black Hole with TARS' help and verify what might be on the other side. They plan to do this and then go out for Edmund's planet, but the catch is that they only have resource for one person to reach Edmund's planet which Cooper does not reveal to Brand. They then launch TARS across and just as they were about to leave the Black Hole's pull, Cooper drops off sacrificing himself and letting Brand take the journey to Edmund's hoping that she would survive and find the purpose.
Now comes the big part. As Cooper falls into Gargantuan the Black Hole, he ejects himself and drops into a 4th dimensional hypercube called the tesseract where time is the 4th dimension. Now how did this happen? This is where everyone was baffled and sort of disappointed or confused. How did Cooper hit back to a tesseract plane of his daughter's room?
Time to open up your minds and read this carefully and again carefully. The entities "They" which the team kept on referring to are the entities or the humans who survived according to the diagram I had shown above. They knew about the sacrifice their ancestors had done or were planning to do for their survival. So, they planned to help the past, so that Plan A can be successful, and Cooper and his daughter Murphy were the only possible link for this to succeed. They created the wormhole, also Gargantuan which is actually the tesseract, but they had no idea how Cooper would relay the information required to Murphy. So, they created the whole tesseract of multiple universe where Cooper would be able to pinpoint the exact plane where he can help Murphy find the solution. Murphy from her childhood was teased by her brother and others on the basis of Murphy's law. So, she had an inherent hatred for it but she overcomes this and believes that there must be a possibility where her father is alive and would help her and so goes back to the room.
Cooper with the help of TARS realizes that he has to help his daughter solve the equation. He also realizes the medium of communication is going to be Gravity and also his Love for his family. The two important forces that can pass through time. He uses the gravity field or gravity string specific to the needles of the watch he had given his daughter to give in the Morse code to finally help Murphy to solve the equation which was lacking the element of Time which old Dr. Brand was afraid of including in his solution.
Once the message had been passed on we see that the Tesseract starts collapsing. The most important thing to observe now is that Cooper is at the center of the Gargantuan/The Black Hole/The Tesseract, where he spends only mere minutes, but they are huge earth times down at earth. We can also confirm this when they were at Miller's, as 1 hour was 7 years there and Miller's was just outside Gargantuan. So, at the center the difference would be more. The moment he has relayed the solution to his daughter and the mere minutes that takes for the collapsing of the tesseract is the actual time on earth that his daughter Murphy solves the equation and the human race builds the Cooper Space station and starts the journey to Edmund's planet where Brand has already sent the beacon confirming the planet to be inhabitable. The time also includes Cooper floating in space and the moment the Cooper space station finds his body, he returns back to the Earth time. So, for Cooper it was all mere minutes whereas for the other humans it was decades.
The rest of the story goes on, where Cooper finally meets with his daughter who is actually older than him physically. Then she suggests him to go and find Brand at Edmund's as no parent should see their children die. This is then carried forward to the credits and an awesome score.
HANS ZIMMER RULEZZZZ!!!
I hope this clears the concepts and the theories shown. Do ping or comment on these for all possible loopholes or ideas.
CHEERS and stay curious while I leave you with this poem by Dylan Thomas!!! :)
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter,starts of with 3.14 and this is just the beginning; it keeps on going, forever and forever, without ever repeating. This means that, contained within this string of decimals, is every single other number. Your birth-date, combination to your locker, your social security number, it's all in there, somewhere. And if you convert these decimals into letters, you would have every word that ever existed in every possible combination; the first syllable you spoke as a baby, the name of your latest crush, your entire life story from beginning to end, everything we ever say or do; all of the world's infinite possibilities rest within this one simple circle. Now what you do with that information;
is up to You!!

Algren: This is Katsumoto's sword. He would have wanted you to have it. He hoped with his dying breath that you would remember his ancestors who held this sword, and what they died for. May the strength of the Samurai be with you always.
Emperor Meiji: You were with him till the last breath?
Algren: Hai (Nods)
Emperor Meiji: Tell me how he died.
Algren: I will tell you how he lived.
